Project Description

Simon Back, owner of the South African winery Backsberg Family Winery, joined John Sporing, founder of A Life Well Drunk for a virtual tasting on October 1st, 2020.

Did you miss the live tasting? No worries, watch it here:

In the tasting we sipped and discussed three wines:

Backsberg Kosher Brut NV

2019 Backsberg Chenin Blanc

2017 Backsberg Kosher Pinotage

We look forward to seeing everyone again soon in person, until then we hope to see you at the tastings, even if you do not have the wines!

Meet the Maker

Simon Back is the Fourth-Generation owner of Backsberg. He studied French in Montpellier, worked a vineyard in California, and worked and traveled in China. He then completed a four-year Business Science Economics Degree at the University of Cape Town. Simon joined his father Michael Back at the Backsberg farm in January 2008 and is now the acting CEO of Backsberg.

The philosophy of Backsberg remains that of providing pleasure and enjoyment to a broad range of wine lovers by producing wines not only with structure and finesse, but also with a high level of “drinkability”.

“To put it simply, if you find our wines easy to drink then we are achieving what we want.”

This philosophy must exist under an overall umbrella of Care. Care of the land, the product and the people who work for them – and care of the environment in which they find themselves. Watch the video to learn more about Backsberg.
